Your historic plantation tour begins with morning pickup from your downtown New Orleans hotel. Once aboard the tour van, settle into a comfortable seat for the ride along the shoreline of Lake Ponchartrain and Great River Road en route to your first stop – San Francisco Plantation.
Explore the plantation's 1856 gothic steamboat style mansion. Here, you will have a guided tour of a colorful authentically restored National Landmark. See the elaborate gingerbread work and flamboyant hand-painted ceilings.
Your guide leads you through details of the lives of generations of Creoles. After visiting the mansion, explore an original slave cabin and the old one-room schoolhouse.
Then, travel to Houmas House and immerse yourself in the story and splendor of the old South as you tour its lavish and traditionally decorated rooms, speckled with artwork and antiques. Indulge in a traditional lunch and relax in the ground of the famed plantation. After lunch, experience the southern splendor of this Sugar Palace. Your tour guide, in antebellum dress, will lead you into 16 rooms filled with period antiques and Louisiana artwork. Upon completion in 1840, Houmas House was the crown jewel of Louisiana's River Road. Its heroically columned Greek revival exterior is stunning. It was topped by a belvédère that surveyed the oak alley leading south to the sweeping bend in the river. From it, you could also see miles and miles of cane fields extending from the Mississippi River to the back swamps!
Enjoy the breeze off of the Mississippi River and stroll the stunning grounds through the shadows of ancient oaks.
