Your undersea expedition starts at Green Pleasure Pier in Avalon, where you'll hop aboard the semi-submersible vessel and journey below the waterline for a look at the underwater world of Catalina Island.

Every passenger has his or her own seat and porthole, but you are also free to walk around the cabin for other viewpoints. Look for fish and other Pacific marine life as your deckhand-guide provides narration about the environment and points of interest. On the way back to the harbor, you may go up on deck to admire views of Avalon before docking.

Dress for the weather. We saw so much under the water. Expected the fish, but their environment put me in awe. Great having children on the tour. They were so excited by the different fish. "That being said," I recommend this trip.

Expedition oversold, and we were bumped!

We made reservations and paid for the Undersea Expedition over two months ago. A couple of weeks prior to the trip, I received a call that we would need to change the time of the reservation due to a "scheduling conflict." No worries...we were able to secure a time that would work within our itinerary. When we boarded the vessel, there were no seats left and we had to leave the vessel. There were no more expeditions scheduled for that day and we were leaving the following morning. While staff were as helpful and sympathetic as they could be, the expedition was oversold by some other booking entity (not Viator) to accommodate a cruise ship full of travelers. We were not able to do this activity, which was the one we were really looking forward to. Viator was very helpful, and we got a full refund, but I had to do all of the leg work to make that happen.

The tour itself was exactly as expected. They even refunded the tickets for two in our party when they got sick right before boarding. The tour operator needs a better sign to identify which tour booth belongs to them. We finally just has to stop and ask at one of the tour booths to be directed to the correct one.

Great activity for the whole family. Crew were competent and friendly. Being able to see the fish feed through the big glass windows was enjoyable for all ages. Being a nature adventure, what you will see is whatever is out there --- no guarantees. However, if you keep your eyes open and stay alert, you will see and observe a lot.
