Kohala Coast

Big Island of Hawaii

The Basics

You can choose to see the Kohala Coast by land, water, or air, with an array of tour options as diverse as the surrounding environment. A drive or hike along the coastal cliffs is perfect for taking in the scenery. Increase your access to the remote attractions by joining an ATV tour that traverses rugged terrain and stops at waterfalls.

To see the dramatic coastline from above, book a helicopter tour that provides stunning views of the ocean and mountains along with displaying Hawaii’s famous volcanoes. For a full immersion experience, join a snorkeling tour that cruises the coastline and stops at picturesque bays along the way for a chance to swim with sea turtles and tropical fish.

Volcano and Kohala Landing Helicopter Tour on the Big Island from Kona
Awesome experience. Page, our helicopter pilot was very knowledgeable and did a great job flying over the active volcano and turning around several times so both sides of the helicopter could see the lava. The Big Island is breathtaking and can’t be accessed by car in a lot of areas. You really can’t appreciate the island until you get into a helicopter to see it for yourself. Highly recommended this tour and company.

Mike is an excellent tour guide, very personable and knowledgeable. The spot for lunch was breathtaking, the little town for coffee was really cute and the hike was beautiful. I could have used a little more hiking, but we hike quite often so could have gone further and longer.

Big Island Snorkel Cruise Along Kohala Coast
Captain Will and his team Gregory and Ty were outstanding. Gregory got in the water with the guest and explained what we were seeing and was teaching us about the water environment we were snorkeling in. The boat, food and stories were top notch so we booked another tour within the same week. I would highly recommend based on the crew’s experience and the ease of getting in and out of the water and the excellent condition of the gear they provided us to use. Maholo Laura

Personal, Fun Tour

Kohala Waterfalls Small Group Adventure Tour
I like this as a small group, more personal, off the crowd tour to visit a site that has 5 waterfalls. It is very laid back, and you will learn a lot of history, culture and people from the tour guide. And finally you will have a lovely lunch at a place overseeing a beautiful coast that is all just for the small group of yours. Totally recommend it.

A Must If You Want To Really Experience the Island!

Volcano and Kohala Landing Helicopter Tour on the Big Island from Kona
Taking this helicopter tour was one of the best decisions I've made in a very long time. I love experiencing as much as I can about new destinations I travel to, their culture, history, geography, etc. With the helicopter tour you see the island in ways you can't see with ground tours or trekking on your own. With a knowledgeable and easy-going pilot makes the experience better. It allows for an excursion that is unequal and memorable that will stay with you. I was able to see the lava bursts which is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I'll never forget. Then add the jaw dropping views of the coast makes this excursion a must for travelers to the island. I've already told my friends about it.

Had a most enjoyable time and it's all due to our guide /leader "Yoga" Mike. He brought a wealth of information and our trek to the waterfall and surrounding area a most pleasurable experience.

Kohala Waterfalls Small Group Adventure Tour
Our guide John was so fun and very knowledgeable about the vegetation, lava, volcanos and Hawaii in general. I would recommend this tour for anyone, there is a hike and steps, but totally doable and the waterfalls and swimming pond was great! Lunch and picnic spot had an outstanding view!

The Rich History of the Kohala Coast

The Kohala Coast has attracted people long before the presence of modern-day resorts and restaurants, which now dot the coastline. Ancient Hawaiian royalty once lived along the sunny coast, leaving behind temples, petroglyphs, historic villages, and ceremonial sites. Many of these relics, such as Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, have been restored and are now popular attractions for Hawaiian culture enthusiasts and archeology buffs.
